Enter the world of the reclusive yet mischievous Impkins!

I’m sure you have seen them out of the corner of your eye from time to time, racing from hiding place to nook or cranny—odd little creatures of stitch and stuffing, of endless variety in form and manner. In these pages, you will not find a taxonomy of their features or a list of the names by which you might call them, you will find guidance on something far more important—the techniques and methods by which you might craft one of these little stitchlings of your very own.

It is a wonderful thing, I assure you, to bring an Impkin to life with hook and yarn, and herein you will find the detailed instructions necessary to craft one, with an endless array of options for ears, antennae, hats, wings, tails, scales, horns, hairstyles, clothing, and accessories. Each Impkin is unique, and only you can listen to find out what yours longs to be. Stitch by stitch, you’ll cast a spell, until at last you have made a brand-new creature. Don’t be surprised if it asks for a snazzy vest or a satchel to hold its treasures!

Though hard to spot at first, when you see one Impkin you can be sure there are more around. Impkins are social little creatures; once you make one, it is sure to clamor for a multitude of friends from your hook!

Review Quotes

It all starts with that one pattern—next thing you know, Megan has you crocheting like a master, taming whatever beast you like!

This quirky outing from Lapp (Crochet Creatures of Myth and Legend) shows how to crochet impkins, or small, stuffed imp-like creatures with oversize eyes. Lapp forgoes traditional projects, instead detailing how to make numerous body types, ears, faces, hats, hairstyles, and miscellaneous features (wings, horns, antlers) that readers can mix and match. Many of the embellishments are plant-inspired, such as the red “mushroom cap,” the “strawberry stem cap,” and an extension for the top of the head resembling two branches sprouting. Others draw on the animal kingdom, including a rainbow lion’s mane, a turtle shell, a cat tail, and bat wings. For indecisive crafters, Lapp provides images of sample impkins and notes which options are used; for instance, one avian impkin bears a crochet feather crest, wings, and bird tail, while a more fantastical design features long horns, pointed elf ears, and a kangaroo-like pocket belly. The impkins are cute, and readers will appreciate the innumerable opportunities for customizing their creatures, though even experienced crocheters will want to acquaint themselves with the stitch dictionary, which uses a few symbols readers may not have encountered before. Fans of amigurumi should check this out.

“Crochet Impkins is another amazing amigurumi book by Megan Lapp! With her stitching, she takes us once again, on a fantastical journey to other worlds…

While Crochet Impkins might not teach you how to crochet, it will teach you how to create your own amigurumi creature - and how to make each one unique! I mean it when I say I don't think you could run out of possibilities here. Fortunately, Megan takes us through the steps quickly and easily, with a quick intro and a fabulous planning sheet. (Break out the scanner, you'll want to make copies!)

Using this sheet, you can start paging through and making your choices. There are 4 basic body styles to choose from: two sitting, and two standing. Pick one of two arm styles, and one of the four belly options, and you're in business!

After that, we start at the top - there are 4 antenna styles, 11 ears options, 6 face styles, 21 different hats and hairstyles, 6 types of horns and antlers... You get the idea! Scales, tails, wings, outfits, and accessories all add to the fun. Like a deck of cards, you can mix and match these forever and never make the same amigurumi twice! Add in all the color options, safety eyes, and yarn weights, and wow!

Of course, Crochet Impkins is chock full of super cute examples of these combos - and each picture includes a circle with the details you need to make one just like it. There are so many "stitchlings" here to get you started!

All the projects pictured are made with worsted weight yarn and a US-G, 4mm crochet book. Megan has a few suggestions, including Red Heart Super Saver. But I think these designs would be just as amazing in a thread - or jumbo yarn! If you or someone you love is into fantasy creatures, both Crochet Impkins and Crochet Creatures of Myth and Legend are must-haves for your crochet bookshelf!”

Megan Lapp’s absolute mastery of stitches and shaping allows her to create patterns with form and motion that is unmatched in crochet. Paired with her imaginative spirit and fairy-like whimsy, her patterns will leave you with projects that make you feel like you created a magical masterpiece.

What’s amazing about these patterns is how flexible they are! I love that my creativity can soar by mixing and matching from different patterns and making something that is uniquely mine without the stress of having to figure it all out on my own.

"VERDICT Crocheters will truly delight in picking features for their own creations of Impkins."—Elizabeth Chandler

WARNING: Crafty Intentions patterns may be ADDICTIVE! Whether you’re a beginner or advanced crocheter, once you get started you won’t be able to stop! If you’re ok with sharing your home with all sorts of magical beasties, then you’ll LOVE these designs and patterns.

Megan’s mastery of design, creativity, and artistry is one of a kind. The EXPERIENCE of creating a Megan Lapp pattern is worth the time and energy that goes into it. These creatures come to life one stitch after another. I come to Megan’s patterns as much for the journey as I do the destination!

With Lapp’s (Crochet Creatures of Myth and Legend) hands-on, creative title, crocheters can enter the magical world of Impkins, introduced in the alternative-universe game Loomian Legacy: Veils of Shadow. This book offers a descriptive table of contents, which can be used as a great and quick reference later. It provides helpful tools—a worksheet to copy and reuse, for example—that crocheters can utilize to determine what their project will look like. There are numerous options to choose from: body styles, tails, horns, clothing, and more. Owing to the tighter and numerous types of stitches used, this title is best for crocheters who have already completed a few beginner projects. Basic knowledge of sewing would also be useful for attaching pieces. The author includes links to a few video tutorials for some of the more intricate techniques. This highly imaginative book offers patterns with a backstory for worldbuilding and cleverly sprinkled hints about caring for the new crocheted critters. VERDICT Crocheters will truly delight in picking features for their own creations of Impkins.—Elizabeth Chandler

Publishers Note: Megan Lapp's Impkins are a wholly original creation, predating those of Loomian Legacy
